NSAI has established a national committee for the bioeconomy, 'NSAI/TC 169 - Bioeconomy'.
The committee will mirror the work of CEN/TC 411 Bio-based products and will monitor and contribute to the review of existing standards and the writing of new standards. The Bioeconomy Action Plan 2023-2025 is the first action plan for an Irish bioeconomy. The bioeconomy encompasses all sectors, associated services and investments that conserve, produce, regenerate, process, distribute or consume biological resources including related ecosystem services, knowledge, science, technology, and innovation.
The NSAI has been allocated actions in the plan as follows:
- Develop a standardisation element, to promte the role of standardisation and its potential to support the bioeconomy.
- Explore and promote funding opportunities for engagement in related to standardisation activities
- Facilitate opportunities for new high added value biobased products and ensure that enterprise, industrial and research policy supports the goal of moving from research to industrial production with accelerated speed.
- Where new high added value biobased products are identified which are not standardised, explore the possibility of the European standardisation route.
If you are active in the area of the bioeconomy and have an interest in participating in a national standards committee, contact James Stapleton at james.stapleton@nsai.ie for further information.
