The latest version of the Irish Standard 3217 (I.S. 3217:2023) has now been published by the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) and is available to buy from NSAI's webstore.
This Standard gives guidelines for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of emergency lighting systems.
The aim of I.S. 3217:2023 is to promote a wider understanding of the different types of emergency lighting systems and modes of operation and to give guidance on their correct application.
Emergency lighting is regarded as a generic term of which there are a number of specific forms. The most common form of it is emergency escape lighting, that aims to provide adequate illuminance to escape routes from buildings so that people can evacuate safely even if there is a power loss.
Through application of this Standard, organisations engaged in the design, installation, commissioning, or maintenance of emergency lighting systems can enhance their reputation, providing their customers with confidence that their system meets best practice guidelines.
