Who should consider getting certified in innovation?
Innovation is a complex subject and agenda and you are dealing with lots of information and uncertainties. So it is very different from the ongoing management and operational skillsets. Anyone in this role should know international best practice and have a deep understanding of how to manage and deliver innovative outcomes for their various key stakeholders. This is as relevant if you are an internal Innovation champion or an external Innovation Consultant. This individual certification is as an Innovation Management Professional linked to ISO 56002 Innovation Management System and ensures the individual involved has the right depth of knowledge and experience in this area.
How does this certification meet the needs of a professional working in innovation?
The ISO 56000 series gives a practical high-level guide to innovation and its key eight principles and 24 innovation management elements, outlined in the guide standards. This will be developed into a fully certifiable standard circa 2024, so it will be an essential agenda for all ambitious organisations and a good career qualification for anyone seriously interested in this subject and profession.
What does the certification process itself involve?
It is a very thorough process. The applicant must show their level of experience with a case story and a reference contact person, whom they contact to validate. There is a written examination, comprised of over 30 multi-choice questions over a 3 hour period, where you have to explain some of your choices. There is then a two-hour 1:1 interview exploring experience and knowledge.
